It was first transported to England in 1861, where it quickly became a popular breed.

It is now predominantly found in Ethiopia’s northern regions, notably in the Semien Mountains in the Gondar area of the Amhara Region.
It is one of the world’s oldest horse breeds still in existence today.
About 2.8 million horses live in Ethiopia, which is more than half of the African continent’s entire population of horses.
