Beginning in the 1920s and 1930s, a cross was developed in order to produce a horse that was larger and faster than the native Kabarda, but that was also adapted to the climate of the northern Caucasus region of Russia and was able to maneuver in mountainous terrain.
The cross originated in the area that is known as the Karbardino-Balkar Republic, which is located in the northern regions of the Caucasus region.
The breed was developed by crossing the Kabarda (or Kabardin) mares with English Thoroughbred stallions.
In particular, the three Thoroughbred-bred stallions, Lestorik, Loksen, and Leikki, are primarily to be recognized for the development of this breed.
The Anglo-Kabarda was developed in response to a need for a new breed that was not only quick, but also robust and durable, able to withstand the harsh weather conditions of mountainous terrains and thrive comfortably on low-quality fodder.
