Austrian Warmblood Facts & Information (Breed Profile)
The Austrian Warmblood is a breed of horse that originated in Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 18th century, and was bred to be a cavalry horse.
It was developed from the early Furioso, Nonius, Gidran, and Shagya strains.
In the late 19th century, the breeding program for the Austrian Warmblood incorporated the speed and spirit of the Thoroughbred as well as the endurance and elegance of the Arabian.
These two breeds were included in the breeding program with the intention of refining the characteristics of the Austrian Warmblood.
There were a number of imperial stud farms throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire that were used for breeding horses.
The purpose of these farms was producing farm horses for the common people, riding and carriage horses for the nobility, and cavalry mounts and artillery horses for the military.
They are registered with the Association of Warmblood Breeding in Austria (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Warmblutzucht in Österreich – AWÖ).
The AWÖ keeps an open studbook, however in order for mares and stallions to be eligible for use as breeding stock, they must first pass a series of strict inspections.
A total of around 2,500 mares and 80 stallions are listed in the studbook.
