Auvergne Horse Facts & Information (Breed Profile)

The battle of the plains of Voussé between Charles Martel and the Saracens in 732 is considered to be the beginning of the Auvergne horse’s breed.

As a result of their impending loss, the Saracens were forced to abandon their oriental horses.

These animals have developed a robust constitution that allows them to withstand both disease and the harsh elements of the mountainous environment in which they live.

In the 17th century, the breed was split into two distinct branches.

War Horse Type: English Thoroughbred and Anglo-Arab blood was added to create a strong, battle-ready horse. Over time, the original Auvergne characteristics began to disappear from this breed so the breeding was eventually discontinued.

Agriculture Horse Type: These animals were developed primarily for use on farms and were able to maintain their adaptability through the years.

They were most popular in the late 18th and early 19th century.

Many draft-types have seen their numbers dwindle with the invention of modern machines, so the Auvergne was no exception.

There are, however, organizations that are devoted to reestablishing the breed and conserving the legendary features that they possess, and their genetic heritage.

In December 2012, the Haras Nationaux – the French organization of horse breeders – recognized it as an official breed.

The Auvergne horse has retained its battle horse appearance to this day.
