Brandenburger Horse Facts & Information (Breed Profile)

Although there was no uniform or standardized breed at the time, horse breeding was first mentioned in documents in the Brandenburg March in the 15th century.

In 1787, an effort was made to breed a warmblood horse that would be light enough to pull a carriage but also heavy enough to work.

In 1788, King Frederick Wilhelm II established the Neustadt/Dosse national and state stud, which had a significant impact on the development of the Brandenburger horse.

The Warmblood Breeding Society was established in 1922 with the goal of breeding horses for agricultural use.

Keeping this in mind, the Hanovarian breed’s blood was also employed to enhance the stock.

As a direct consequence of the significant progress made in mechanization in the decades following World War II, the demand for heavy warmblood horses began to decline.

Trakehners, Hanoverians, and English Thoroughbreds were used to develop the modern Brandenburger sport horse in the mid 20th century.
