Castillonnais Facts & Information (Breed Profile)

Castillonais horses are an ancient breed of small saddle horses that are native to the Ariège département in the south-western region of France.

The Castillonnais, like many other French Pyrenean breeds, is said to be descended from the horses that inspired ancient cave drawings like those seen at the Cave of Niaux.

The breed’s look and temperament have changed throughout time as blood from Oriental and Iberian horses has been introduced.

The Pyrenees horses were well-known in the late 1800s for their use as light cavalry mounts.

After almost dying out in the 20th century, a dedicated group of individuals started working in the 1980s to rescue the breed, and by 1992, the Association Nationale du Cheval Castillonnais d’Ariège Pyrénées had been established.
