Danish Warmblood Facts & Information (Breed Profile)
Originally, Denmark didn’t have a riding horse.
Even though the Knappstrupper and the Fredriksborg were the most common breeds they were both driving horses, so riding horses had to be imported.
The Danish Warmblood Society (Dansk Varmbloed Avlsforbund – DVA) was founded in 1962, making the Danish Warmblood breed relatively new.
The goal of the association was to create a horse suitable for sport and competition, and the breed was called the “Danish Sport Horseā.
In those early years the stallions were predominantly of Swedish, Trakehner, Hanoverian and Holstein origin.
As a result of its proximity to Sweden, Danish Warmblood breeding was heavily influenced by Swedish horses and modeled after the Swedish breeding program.
Prior to the year 2004, the Danish Warmblood Society’s mission was to produce a versatile sport horse.
However, today, modern breeding programs are more focused on producing a particular kind of performance horse, such as a top show jumper or dressage mount.
Although Denmark joined the Warmblood breeding scene later than many other countries, their annual Danish Warmblood Stallion Show in Herning is now a key event for the international performance horse industry.
Danish Warmblood is a performance breed, so any suitable horse, regardless of its origin, may be accepted as long as it can pass a rigorous performance test.
