Furioso-North Star Facts & Information (Breed Profile)

The breed originated at Mezőhegyes State Stud Farm in the 19th century, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and its original use was as military riding horse.

Two stallions are widely acknowledged as the founders of the breed.

The first was Furioso, a Thoroughbred stallion born in Hungary in 1836 who, starting in 1841, was crossbred with local Hungarian mares.

The other was also a Thoroughbred stallion by the name of North Star, who was born in 1844 and was brought over from England in 1852.

He was also crossed with local mares and maybe with horses of Norfolk Trotter heritage.

There is a possibility that these horses were also crossbred with Nonius horses.

Initially, the two lineages were kept distinct, with the Furioso line being used to produce riding horses, and the North Star line being used to produce driving horses.

However, in the late 19th century, the lines were merged.

The number of Furioso North Star horses decreased drastically after the World Wars, and the breed’s survival depended on only a few animals.

In 1985, the breed benefitted from a breeding conservation initiative that was financially supported by the government of Hungary.

The Furioso North Star Association has been in charge of breeding operations since 1989.

Following the transition in political power that took place in 1989–1990, state farms and cooperative breeding stocks were shut down.

The rare breed is becoming popular again as a sport horse in Hungary and Slovakia, even though their numbers are still low.

The Furioso is mostly found in Central Europe, especially in Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Czech Republic and Austria.
