Jutland Horse Facts & Information (Breed Profile)

The breed is named after the Jutland Peninsula in the west of Denmark.

The origins of the breed are not entirely known, although some evidence suggests that their ancestors were used by the Vikings in the early 9th century.

The Jutland breed was first mentioned in writing in the 12th century, when they were used as battle horses.

In the past they were mostly used to transport goods and pull carriages.

Since 1928, the Carlsberg Brewery has relied on the Jutland to pull its drays.

At one point in time, the company had around 210 Jutlands; however, they only make use of approximately 20 of them now to deliver beer all throughout Copenhagen.

As a way to advertise the brewery and the breed, Carlsberg horses often compete and put on performances at events.

The first studbook for the breed was formed in 1881, and by 2007 a total of 22,000 horses were registered.

However, as of 2011, just around 1,000 Jutlands remain, according to a Danish breed conservation organization.
