Pleven Horse Facts & Information (Breed Profile)

The Pleven Horse breed is mostly descended from Anglo-Arab horses, and it was granted formal recognition as a breed in the year 1951.

The development of the breed started in 1898 at the Klementina stud in Pleven region (now called Georgi Dimitrov Industrial Animal Complex), when the finest local mares were crossed with Arabian and Anglo-Arabian stallions. Later, Gidran stallions were also introduced.

Blood from English Thoroughbreds was also added in order to give them more refinement and increase in size.

The breed is still being carefully bred in Bulgaria, and there are efforts being made to further improve its size, which would make it more desirable as an international sport horse.

The Pleven, Danubian horse, and the Eastern Bulgarian horse are the 3 modern breeds in Bulgaria.
