Poney du Logone Facts & Information (Breed Profile)
The Poney du Logone is a pony breed that originated in the African countries of Chad and Cameroon and was originally domesticated by the Mousseye tribe.
Some think that the Poney Mousseye descended from the Barb, but developed into a shorter variant due to a lack of suitable feed in their habitat.
Tsetse flies, which cause the fatal illness known as ‘Sleeping Sickness’ or ‘Trypanosomosis’, were present in large numbers in the area around the Logone River, where these small horses were bred; however, the horses have shown to develop resistance to the disease.
The breed was first recorded in 1826, but was described only in 1926.
Their numbers are today in decline as a result of the absence of structured breeding programs as well as the increased use of motorized transportation.
The Equine Program was established by the government of Cameroon in 1986 with the purpose of preventing the breed from becoming extinct.
Cameroon has also launched an initiative to develop its horse industry.
