Posavac Facts & Information (Breed Profile)

The Posavac is a breed of medium-sized draft horse native to Croatia that is known for its exceptional capacity to pull heavy loads.

In the past, this breed has been popular for pulling wagons.

The breed was created in Croatia in the Posavina region alongside the river Sava.

It was derived from a native Slavonian-Posavian horse breed known as Bušak, the mares of which were crossed with high-quality stallions of various breeds like Arabian, Nonius, Noriker, and Percheron.

They had a great economic value before the advent of mechanization in agriculture. Among other things, they served in towing ships on the river Sava.

They are mostly bred and kept outdoors so they are well adapted to the local climate and are considered easy keepers.

In 1991, systematic breeding and selection work began.

Posavina horses are mostly found in Croatia, but there are also some in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Slovenia.

Today, the breed is endangered.
