Salernitano Facts & Information (Breed Profile)
Salernitano was developed in 1762 by the Bourbon king Charles III in the Italian province of Salerno at the Royal Stud of Persano near Serre.
The foundation stock included Oriental, Neapolitan, and Spanish blood.
The Salernitano horse was initially created as a mount for the Italian cavalry and was used by the Italian military up until 1947.
The Salernitano gained popularity as a sport horse because the Italian army supported competitive equestrian sports and made the cavalry horses available to its soldiers to use in competitions.
From the conclusion of World War II until the 1970s, the Italian military’s equestrian jumping squad, which was mainly mounted on Salernitanos, was regarded as one of the best teams in the world.
The introduction of Thoroughbred blood in the early 20th century significantly improved the overall quality of the breed.
Because both the Salerno and the Persano horses were developed at the same time at the Royal Stud of Persano, it is generally accepted that the two distinct breeds are descended from the same foundation stock.
Even though the Salernitano was formerly registered with the Persano, in 2015 the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry formally recognized the two breeds as distinct.
