Zaniskari Facts & Information (Breed Profile)

The Zaniskari Pony is native to the Ladakh area of Jammu and Kashmir State in northern India.

Because there have been no formal breeding protocols in place, pureblooded animals have unfortunately become quite uncommon.

It is named after the Zanskar valley in Kargil district.

It is quite similar to the Spiti breed that is native to Himachal Pradesh, although it is more adapted to working at high elevations.

As is the case with the Spiti, it resembles the neighboring Tibetan breeds.

In 2007, scientific research was done to determine the genetic variance across Indian equine breeds, including Zanskari horses.

DNA testing revealed that Zanskari horses and Marwari horses have a significant genetic difference between them; nevertheless, other equine breeds, such as Bhutia, Spiti, and Manipuri horses, are closely related to Zanskari horses.

Zanskaris are said to have been influenced by the Tibetan pony, whereas Marwaris are thought to have descended from Arabian horses.
