Over the course of more than two centuries of careful breeding, the Balikun developed into a unique breed.
According to the records, the territory that is now the county of Balikun was once ruled by Kazakh and Mongolian tribes, who crossed their horses with the native ponies that lived in this region.
With temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit, farmers of the region carefully bred them for their ability to survive out in the open.
The horses that were born as a result of selective breeding were evaluated, and those that had the best overall health were kept for further breeding, while those that were less robust were put up for sale.
As a result, horses of the Baikun lineage became tougher, surviving in difficult conditions with inadequate food.
