The East Bulgarian horse was developed recently and originates from the stud farms in Kabiuk, near Sofia.
Late in the 19th century, local horses, Arabian, Anglo-Arabian, and Thoroughbred bloodlines were used to begin the process of developing this breed.
The desired outcome was a warmblood horse that was good for rigging, racing and working.
Once the breed was well-established, only Thoroughbred blood was added to further improve it.
The breed was formally recognized in 1951.
The East Bulgarian, Danubian horse and Pleven horse are the 3 modern breeds in Bulgaria.
