Today they are very rare and very close to extinction.
It is one of the 15 indigenous horse breeds of limited distribution acknowledged by the AIA, the Italian horse breeders’ association.
It gets its name from the Pentri, an ancient Samnite tribe.
The Pentro, like many other breeds native to Italy, are kept outside year round, and considered feral.
